FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does Marching Band Take? Will I have the time?
Weekly rehearsals are scheduled from 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Weekly sectional rehearsals will also be held outside of class time. This rehearsal time and location is set at the beginning of the semester so you are able to coordinate your schedule accordingly. On game day, the marching band has rehearsal at Aloha Stadium. Occasionally smaller bands will perform for athletic events and pep rallies at the stadium that follow rehearsal and prior to our pre-game performance. On non-performance weeks, the marching band rehearses three times a week. Seldom does a student drop marching band because of time problems. It is an important part of their day that does not demand too much time; we only rehearse an hour and a half every other day. Always remember that one part of being a college student is being a student! It is important to develop socially and have healthy outlets to balance the academic demands of being a student. What better way than to join the marching band!

How many performances does the Marching Band have?
The marching band performs at all home football games at Aloha Stadium. Depending on the given season, we normally perform for 8 to 9 home football games. The band also occasionally performs for pep rallies, and campus and athletic department events.

As a Marching Band member, how much should I expect to pay?
There is a fee at the beginning of the semester (less than $40) to cover the cost of uniform cleaning, a band t-shirt, flip folder, a hat to wear in the stands, and shoes.

What if I have a class conflict with Marching Band?
Due to limited rehearsal time, attendance at all rehearsals is crucial. However, if a class conflict cannot be avoided, never assume that you cannot participate! Contact Mr. Payne as soon as possible, and he will explain the possibilities open to you. We want everyone to be a member!

How do I get into one of the pep bands?
The women's volleyball band is based on seniority and auditions. Announcements regarding women's volleyball pep band will be given on the first day of classes, or possibly during band camp. The men's and women's basketball pep bands are comprised of all students in the marching band, and are divided up evenly according to instrumentation and ability.

How do I join?
Membership is open to all UH Manoa students and students enrolled in a local community college. Make sure you have filled out the appropriate paper work so you are aware of rehearsals, performances, and other pertinent information.
